BOARD OF WATER SUPPLY ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF
2009 EXTREME XERISCAPE GARDEN MAKEOVER CONTEST

HONOLULU - The Board of Water Supply (BWS) proudly announced Cyndie and Ray Fernandez of Kapahulu as the winners of its EXTREME Xeriscape Garden Makeover Contest.  The announcement was made today (12/14/09) at a yard breaking ceremony at the family's home on Hoolulu Street.  The Fernandez family was selected out of hundreds of applicants to win a $20,000 garden makeover using the principles of xeriscaping, which helps to conserve water through efficient landscaping.  The garden makeover is expected to take about a month to complete.

"This contest highlights how Oahu homeowners can preserve our water supply by using water more efficiently in their landscaping," said Mayor Mufi Hannemann.  "Taking simple steps like these help to make Honolulu an environmentally friendly and sustainable city."

"My husband and I are so excited to get unthirsty plants that are native to Hawaii," said Cyndie Fernandez.  "I never knew so many flowers were considered unthirsty.  It makes us very happy knowing we get to have beautiful garden that uses less water."

Steve's Gardening Service, one of the contest's key sponsors and the landscape architect doing the installation and design, will use xeriscape concepts in the Fernandez family's garden to take advantage of natural climate conditions and to make efficient use of irrigation.  Some of the principles include growing plants that don't need a lot of water to survive, using mulch, and installing proper irrigation.

"Incorporating xeriscape techniques not only helps to conserve water, but it also saves consumers money on their water bills," said BWS Chairman Randall Chung.  "We estimate using xeriscaping techniques in gardens can save about 30 to 80 percent in water consumption for the average single family home."

"Using xeriscape principles is an important component of conservation in the community," said BWS Manager and Chief Engineer Wayne Hashiro.  "We want to show people they can still have lush gardens without using as much water for maintenance."

The garden makeover contest was made possible by the BWS, in partnership with Steve's Gardening Service Inc, Rain Bird, and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden.  For more information on xeriscaping, please visit www.boardofwatersupply.com or call the BWS Communications Office at 748-5041.
