KO'OLAU MOUNTAIN RANGE

KO'OLAU MOUNTAIN WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP

GOAL:
protect the mauka forested watersheds that fall in the forestry reserve boundary.  Some previous projects involve surveying lands to record what's on the property- natives species (rare and endangered), fencing projects to protect the resources from pigs and goats,  invasive species control.

PARTNERS:
Comprised of landowners in the Ko'olau Mountains. 
Founding members include Department of Land and Natural Resources, Agribusiness Development Corporation, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, U.S. Army, The Board of Water Supply, Queen Emma Foundation, Kamehameha Schools, Manana Valley Farms, Tiana Partners, Bishop Museum, Kualoa Ranch, Hawai'i Reserves Inc, O'ahu Country Club.

US Fish and Wildlife Service, Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i.

PUNALU'U WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP

GOAL:
Restore the stream and stream life in Punalu'u.

PARTNERS:
Kamehameha Schools, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Punalu'u Community Association, Board of Water Supply (BWS), Commission on Water Resource Management(CWRM)

PROJECT:
Develop in-stream flow standards

WAIHE'E AHUPUA'A INITIATIVE- WITH KEY PROJECT

GOAL
:
Restore and protect Waihe'e/Kahaluu watershed

PARTNERS:
BWS, Kualoa-Heeia Ecumenical Youth Project (KEY) 

PROJECT:
In 2003, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed during "Make a Difference Day" in Waihe'e. This project is currently in the planning phase.  

AHUPUA'A RESTORATION COUNCIL OF HEEIA

PROJECT:
Heeia/Haiku valley-restore stream and terraces in Haiku valley.

WAI'ANAE MOUNTAIN RANGE

WAI'ANAE KAI COMMUNITY FOREST PARTNERSHIP

GOAL:
Develop community based management plan for Wai'anae Kai and Makaha Valley.

PARTNERS
:
BWS, Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Mohala I Ka Wai, Ka'ala Farms Inc.,  'Ilioulaokalani Coalition . With the help of University of Hawai'i at Manoa Botany Department, The Nature Conservancy, Pig Hunters Association.

PROJECT
:
Wai'anae Kai-Makaha soil stabilization project
Install soil erosion control material in the burn site on ridge between Waianae Kai and Makaha to prevent major erosion.  Future efforts will be to do replanting for restoration.

UH Botany project
In Makaha Valley, UH students conducting research projects on forest plants

MOHALA I KA WAI
Waianae and Makaha Partnership


GOALS:
Restore the valley and stream in Makaha.

PARTNERS
:
Members of Mohala I Ka Wai and Ka'ala Farm, Inc. include Wai'anae High School, Nanakuli High School, Makaha Elementary School, Hoa Aina o Makaha, and more...

PROJECT
:
to do stream monitoring, rainfall data collection, restoration of archeological sites
and reduce the amount of pumping from Makaha wells for 5 years to see if it'll benefit the stream.

PROJECT:
Develop a master plan for Makaha valley with Townscape, and start the beginning
stages of restoring the area for lo'i restoration and restore stream flow.

MAKUA IMPLEMENTATION PLAN WITH THE ARMY

GOALS
:
Assist the Army with the Makua Implementation Plan.

PARTNERS:
Army and BWS along with other land owners in the Wai'anae mountains.  A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Army was signed to assist with the implementation of the Makua Implementation Plan.

PROJECT
Fence project in Makaha.  Small scale fence endangered species to protect from pigs and goats.  A larger scale fence is being planned as part of the Makua Implementation Plan with the Army

PROJECT
Ka'ala bog fence.  On-going efforts to fence the bog on Kaala to keep out the pigs. (With the Army and State)

OTHER PROJECTS/PARTNERSHIPS

O'AHU INVASIVE SPECIES COMMITTEE (OISC)

GOALS:
Our sole purpose is to share resources in combatting invasive alien species.  OISC members plan and coordinate control of recently introduced plants and animals that threaten natural areas, watersheds, the economy, and quality of life on O'ahu.  OISC members voluntarily stop O'ahu's worst new pests before they spread.

PARTNERS

Voluntary partnership of over 40 government agencies, non-profit organizations, private businesses and individuals. 

'ELEPAIO BANDING AND RAT BAITING

GOALS
:
Banding 'Elepaio (Endangered native flycatcher bird) and rat baiting to reduce the chances of egg or bird predation in Makaha Valley.

PARTNERS:
US Fish and Wildlife Services and Army

KULEANA PROJECT

GOALS
:
Promote awareness of water conservation and non-point source pollution.

PARTNERS:
Malama O Manoa, BWS, schools in the area.
